Across the country, many day spas and resort spas have begun offering medical services, therapies and advice along with more traditional spa services like massage and facials. Likewise, many physicians have also realized the benefits offered their patients/clientele by integrating spa services into their medical practices to augment procedures.

Many types of spas -- from resort spas to day spas -- are incorporating medical services into their menus of options. Such spas now employ a range of health professionals including: physicians, nurses, nutritionists, dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, exercise physiologists, psychologists, health educators, acupuncturists, Chinese herbalists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and podiatrists. These health professionals perform an assortment of medical services for spa guests, from bone density evaluations to cardiac treadmill stress tests to personal medical consultations.

Staffing Demands Mirror Industry Growth

Although medical spas will probably never employ as many health professionals as hospitals and clinics, the demand for qualified staff at medical spas is certainly growing. Recruiting medical staff to provide desired services is but part of the equation as it is essential that they provide support for all spa services and products. The difficulty lies in creating a menu of service that is synergistic with the doctor's way of thinking, yet still a marketable product. Doctors often feel divided with regard to the benefits of certain Spa services.
